Film
Much of the film scoring I completed to this point is non-commercial. La Vache Enragee's multi-media "Shorts Projects" were an amalgam of short films accompanied by live, original music and short plays.
These clips below are from my graduate thesis during my Master of Music, Composition program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The work consisted of four film pieces, accompanied by live music. Each piece explored a different technique of handling music for film.
The War of the Planets
The War of the Planets is a 1958 super-8 film. Learn more about the film on the Internet Movie Database here.
Following the very first traditions of film music, the accompaniment for the film is anecdotal based on string techniques assigned to specific actions and images. There are five categories of music that correspond to the film themes: humans, aliens, alien planet and headquarters, spaceships, and dialogue cards. Each category has a special string effect. For example, dialogue cards use con legno (with the wood of the bow), as well as pizzicato, and glissandi.
Variations on a Life
Variations on a Life is a compilation of four shorter super-8 family films created by my father and his immediate family. Each of the four sections have an element of battle or play attached to them, including a rather rigorous snowball fight.
Below are two samples of the larger work, which like War of the Planets is scored for a string quartet. The music for the film is through-composed, with thematic elements, though not verbatim as War of the Planets.
Also included is my thesis work is a re-scoring of a piece of film in which the music is indelibly linked to the images. Namely Disney's Fantasia and its use of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.
The last film, Ordinary Superhero was a project in reverse. Music was composed, then a film was created to suit the mood and programmatic story.
